A short film of recall, quiz, and role-play practice built from a course

Most people find out they’re not ready when it counts

You can follow every point in a course and still stumble when it’s time to use it. The interview, the client pitch, the first time you try the method on your own project. Getting ready takes practice, and there’s rarely anyone to run the reps with, so the real thing ends up being your first practice attempt.

From remembering an idea to using it for real

Your practice comes in many forms, from quick flashcards to full rehearsals, all built on techniques from learning research such as retrieval practice, spacing, self-explanation, and interleaving. Your practice agent picks what fits each idea, and you can start any of them yourself.

Remember it

Flashcards and quick quizzes drawn from your resources, with each answer pointing back to where it came from. In the app they’re called recall cards: see the prompt, reveal the answer, and say how you did.

An explain-back prompt about second-order thinking, with Coach asking about a later consequence.

Explain it and judge it

Explain an idea back in your own words, keep asking why until it holds up, compare two ideas, or spot the flaw in an argument. Your practice agent pushes on the weak spots and tells you what to tighten.

Rehearse it

Tell your practice agent who you’ll be talking to, when, and what’s at stake. It pulls in the ideas from your library that fit, plays the other side, and then tells you what held and what drifted.

A small, safe experiment to try at work, drawn from the learner’s course notes

Try it for real

Pick a small experiment to run on your own work, like trying one technique in your next pitch, and set a date to check in on how it went.

Practice that fits your week and your goals

Practice is organized into playbooks, one for each thing you want to work on.

The updated playbook shows three activities across Cutting clutter in drafts and Writing as authentic thinking, with Landed, Continue rep and Run it states.

A playbook for each goal

Point one at a focus area, a collection, or a single resource, and choose how much effort you want. Your practice agent keeps it stocked, and the week can include a review guide or cheat sheet to read, written from that same material.

Sized to the time you have

Set how much time you have each week, from under an hour to more than four, and the week’s practice fits it. Done early? Call it a week, or ask for a few more.

Second-order thinking marked Fading, with a short prompt to revisit the idea.

What’s fading comes first

Every idea keeps its own review schedule. The ones starting to fade move to the front of your week, so you go back over them while they’re still there.

It asks a little more each time

When you get an idea right, the next round asks more of you. After a few misses, it eases off. Feedback tells you what held and what to change, with no scores or streaks to chase.

Common questions

Yes. Practice comes from anything in your library that Bettership has read, including YouTube videos, podcast episodes, articles, PDFs, captures of live sessions, and your own notes. Open a resource and choose Practice this, or ask for a quiz on it in chat. A book added by its title has no text to practice from, so add your own notes on it instead.

Yes. Every idea you practice gets its own review schedule, from a day out to two months. Each time you get it right, the next review moves further out, and each time you miss, it comes back sooner. The ideas that are starting to fade come first in your week’s practice.

Yes. Describe it: who it’s with, when, and what’s at stake. Your practice agent pulls in the ideas from your library that fit, plays the other person, and then tells you what held and what to change. You can also role-play any idea you’re learning, or run a scenario that raises the stakes partway through. Role-plays happen in text for now.

It tells you what held and what to change after each round, and shows which ideas are fresh and which are fading. There are no scores, grades, or streaks.

No. Practicing and talking with your practice agent never use credits, on any plan. Making a review guide or cheat sheet uses a credit or two. Core includes one playbook, Plus includes three, and Max as many as you like. See pricing

Yes. Start any kind yourself, from flashcards to a rehearsal, on any idea or resource. You can also pick a session length (short, medium, or long) and lean your practice easier or harder in Settings.
