Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 6, 2026
Last updated: October 6, 2026
Bettership is a personal AI workspace for learning and practice. The way it works, it holds a fair amount of personal context: resources you’ve brought in, live captures you’ve made, notes you’ve taken, and conversations you’ve had with Bettership. This page explains what we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and how to leave with your data. We don’t sell your data or share it for advertising. If anything here is unclear, email us.
1. Who we are
Bettership is a product operated by Scoutio LLC.
Scoutio LLC is a California limited liability company. “Bettership” is the name under which it operates this product. In this policy, “we,” “us,” and “Bettership” all mean Scoutio LLC.
You can reach us about anything in this policy at privacy@bettership.ai. Our mailing address is Scoutio LLC, PO Box 6060, San Diego, CA 92166.
2. Who this is for
Bettership is built for adult learners in the United States. People outside the US are welcome, with some caveats below.
Bettership is designed for people 18 and older. People elsewhere can sign up and may have additional rights under their local law. For now, email is the way to exercise those rights, except that you can delete your account yourself in the desktop app. Section 7 explains how.
Bettership is not for children under 18. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we delete it.
3. What we collect
Bettership holds the material you bring in, the live captures you make, your conversations with its AI features, the learning context built from all of that, and the diagnostic data needed to keep the product working.
Here are the categories, in plain terms.
Account and billing info. Your name, email address, profile details, preferences, and sign-in information. Our authentication service holds your hashed password if you use one. When you buy a plan or extra credits, Stripe, our payment service, collects your payment details on its own checkout page. Bettership keeps your plan, allowance and payment status, and the Stripe identifiers needed to reconcile charges. Bettership never receives your full card number.
Content you bring in. The articles, books, podcasts, videos, files, notes, and links you add to your Library, along with their text, images, transcripts, and identifying details. Bettership also keeps the summaries, connections, practice work, and other content it creates from what you share.
Pages you add with the browser extension. The extension asks for website access at installation so it can work with the page you’re viewing. While its side panel is open, or when you use its browser menu, it reads the active page and reachable frames, including after you switch tabs or navigate. Those reads happen in your browser. A requested preview may send the page address to Bettership. A screenshot used only for the preview stays in your browser. When you choose Add resource, the extension sends the selected article’s text, title, address, available author and publication details, and supported images, or the link you chose, to your account. This can include a page you are signed in to read. The extension doesn’t send website cookies or passwords to Bettership’s backend. Added material follows the same storage and AI processing as other Library resources.
Bettership’s use of information obtained through its browser extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Live captures you make. When you start a live capture, Bettership can record your microphone and computer audio and save screenshots, notes, and a transcript. The transcript is stored as spoken: we don’t mask names, contact details, or other identifiers. Anything said during a recording, by you or someone else, is kept in full. Treat a recording as you would notes you took by hand: don’t start one where something is being said that you wouldn’t want written down.
Watching a window. During a live capture, if you enable the Watch window feature, Bettership saves images when the selected window changes. Watching limits those images to that window, not your whole screen, but the recording can still include audio from your computer. An indicator names the watched window, and you can stop watching or pause the live capture. The images and text read from them stay on your computer until you finish. Bettership then uploads the retained images and text to your private workspace. It doesn’t send the images to an AI service for description, but the extracted text can be sent to AI services to work on your live capture. Local copies are removed after a successful upload. Failed uploads can leave copies for recovery.
Conversations and learning context. What you ask, the responses Bettership gives, and relevant details from your profile, resources, live captures, prior conversations, and practice. We use that context to make responses relevant to what you’re learning and working toward.
Observability data. Device and connection information, including IP address, product activity, errors, and records of AI requests. AI diagnostic records can contain prompts, responses, and the learner context used in a request. If the desktop app crashes, it keeps a crash file on your computer. Bettership is told only that a crash happened, with its time, which part of the app stopped, and the app and macOS versions. In-app session replay is not enabled.
4. How we use it
We use this information to help you add resources, connect what you’ve learned, practice, and make useful things, and to keep the product and business running behind it.
Run Bettership’s features. We use your material and learning context to organize resources, transcribe and summarize live captures, answer your questions, and support practice and creation. Text read from watched frames can be used in live capture summaries and Bettership’s responses, even though the frame images aren’t sent for AI description.
Improve and protect the product. We use activity and diagnostic data to fix bugs, evaluate AI quality, and understand what’s working. When practical, we use aggregated or de-identified information for product analysis.
Operate the business. We use account details to keep you signed in, send account notices, manage your plan and payments, and respond when you contact us.
Connections to your AI tools (not enabled for learners yet). When enabled, you can authorize an AI tool to read your Library, your published Maker items, or both. Library access can include note resources and capture transcripts and notes. You review the files before publishing a Maker item, and personal information you approve in those files is included. Published-item permission covers later items you publish too. It does not grant access to your learner profile, Focus Areas, practice history, or Bettership conversations. Settings lets you disconnect a tool, and Studio lets you unpublish an item. Access requires a paid Plus or Max plan, including the existing seven-day failed-renewal grace period.
5. Who we share it with
We use outside services to run Bettership. What they receive depends on the feature you use.
Account, storage, and hosting. Keeps your account and private workspace working. What it can receive: Account details, resources, live captures, notes, conversations, files, and operational records. Some AI diagnostic records include the messages and context involved in a request.
AI and search. Answers requests and helps search your Library or the public web. What it can receive: Your messages, relevant profile and Focus Area details, resource text, live capture transcripts (including other people’s words), notes, images, and search terms. An AI request can pass through a routing service to the company hosting the model. We don’t send your whole workspace with every request.
Transcription. Turns audio into text. What it can receive: Audio from live captures and, when needed, audio or video resources you add. That can include a video from a private or signed-in page you chose to add, and everything said in it. The returned transcripts keep spoken identifiers intact.
Analytics and error tracking. Helps us understand use and fix problems. What it can receive: Account identifiers, IP address, device details, activity, errors, and the crash notices described in Section 3. In-app replay is off, and we’ll update this policy before turning it on.
Payments. Runs checkout for plans and extra credits, and charges subscriptions. What it can receive: Your email address, the plan or credits you choose and the price, the payment and billing details you enter on its checkout page, and transaction status. It sends Bettership customer, subscription, invoice, and payment status identifiers, never your full card number.
Email and support. Delivers account messages and handles requests. What it can receive: Your email address, account messages (which can include a sign-in code or confirmation link), and what you tell us when you ask for help or make a privacy request. Account emails come from hello@bettership.ai.
Sign-in providers. If you choose Google or Apple sign-in, that company handles your sign-in and provides the account information you allow. If you use Apple’s Hide My Email, account messages pass through Apple’s forwarding service. Their own privacy policies apply to those interactions: Google and Apple.
Payments. When you buy a plan or extra credits, you pay on Stripe’s own checkout page, and Stripe sends your payment receipts and its own billing reminders directly. Stripe’s privacy policy applies to what you enter and receive there.
Websites and media hosts. When Bettership fetches something you add, the original site receives the address requested and ordinary connection information. A download made by the desktop app can expose your device’s public IP address to the destination. Services used to look up public books, podcasts, videos, and web pages receive the link, public content, or identifier being looked up, rather than your account or private workspace.
For a video you choose in the browser extension, applicable website cookies can pass over a local connection to the desktop app and back to the matching website so it can download the video. The extension requests this access at installation. Bettership’s backend and AI services don’t receive those cookies. Downloaded audio can be uploaded for transcription.
Video players. Expanding a video, including following a citation that opens its player, connects your desktop app directly to YouTube (Google), Vimeo, or Loom (Atlassian). The provider receives the video identifier, your public IP address, device and browser information, and playback activity. Bettership does not send your account, notes, transcript, or conversations to the player. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player and Vimeo’s Do Not Track option. These limit some tracking but do not prevent all collection or essential cookies. Loom uses its standard player. The providers control their own cookies and retention: Google, Vimeo, and Atlassian.
AI tools you authorize (when connectors are enabled). Your chosen tool receives the permitted content it requests, including exact published files and Library evidence. Its own model providers may also process that content under your account with that tool. Bettership does not choose or verify those destination providers or their retention settings. Library passage searches send the query and candidate passages to Voyage AI through the existing retrieval service. Ordinary item and resource reads do not call a generative model. Connector credentials and returned content are excluded from connector analytics and diagnostic traces.
No sale, no advertising sharing. We don’t sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Legal requests. If valid legal process requires us to disclose data, we’ll narrow the disclosure as much as we lawfully can and notify you unless we’re prohibited from doing so.
Business transfers. If Scoutio LLC is acquired or merges, data may transfer as part of that transaction. We’ll notify you in advance and ask for your explicit consent before transferring data collected by the extension.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your workspace data while your account is active. Recordings, outside copies, and diagnostic records have different timelines.
Account and workspace content. How long we keep it: While your account is active. What happens on deletion: We remove it from the active workspace within 30 days of account deletion, except for records the law requires us to keep. Backups may hold copies until they rotate.
Recordings and watched frames on your computer. How long we keep it: In the normal streaming mode, recordings stay for seven days so a failed transcription can be recovered. Watched frames stay until the live capture finishes and upload succeeds. What happens on deletion: The desktop app attempts to remove old recordings when it starts and removes frames after successful upload. Files can remain longer if the app isn’t opened or cleanup fails. Failed uploads can remain for recovery.
Temporary audio in Bettership’s storage. How long we keep it: While needed for processing. What happens on deletion: We try to remove it after successful processing. Failed or discarded work can leave uploads until later cleanup.
Copies and request records at outside services. How long we keep it: The period depends on the service and the kind of request. What happens on deletion: We ask the transcription service for live captures to delete successful transcripts and ask again when you delete your account. Those requests may not remove every copy. Deleting data in Bettership doesn’t automatically erase request logs held by outside services or original websites.
AI diagnostic records and operational logs. How long we keep it: AI diagnostic records are normally removed within 60 days. Other logs remain as needed to operate the service or meet legal duties. What happens on deletion: Records without an account, resource, or live capture identifier can remain until their regular cleanup.
Extension sign-in and video cookies. How long we keep it: The sign-in session stays on your computer until you sign out or remove the extension. Cookies used for a requested video download are held for that request. What happens on deletion: The cookies are then discarded. Bettership doesn’t save a cookie file.
Account emails and privacy correspondence. How long we keep it: Sent messages can remain in our email service’s send log after delivery. We keep privacy-request records as needed to handle the request and meet legal duties. What happens on deletion: A sent message can include a time-limited sign-in code or confirmation link.
Billing records in Bettership. How long we keep it: Your plan, referral, checkout, and allowance records remain while your account is active. What happens on deletion: Account deletion first cancels your subscription and deletes your customer record at Stripe, then removes these records.
Payment details and transaction records at Stripe. How long we keep it: Stripe keeps personal data as needed for payment services, legal duties, fraud prevention, and other purposes in its policy. It says that in most jurisdictions this is generally at least five years after the business relationship ends or the last transaction, whichever is later. What happens on deletion: Account deletion cancels your subscription and deletes your Stripe customer record. Stripe may keep transaction records it is required to keep. See Stripe’s retention explanation.
Crash files on your computer. How long we keep it: Up to 30 days. What happens on deletion: The desktop app deletes them after 30 days. A crash file can include part of what the app held in memory, so it never leaves your computer.
Connector authorization and publication records (once enabled). How long we keep it: Connection and release records remain with your account. Encrypted temporary authorization records expire within 15 minutes. Other connector credential records last at most 30 days. Expired records cannot authorize reads and are cleaned up during later writes. What happens on deletion: Disconnect invalidates the connection and removes its credentials. Unpublish withdraws all releases from future reads. Account deletion removes these owned records and artifact files through the existing deletion process.
Content copied into a connected AI tool. How long we keep it: Determined by that tool, its model providers, and your account settings. What happens on deletion: Disconnect, unpublish, and deletion in Bettership cannot erase content already received elsewhere. Delete destination conversations, caches, or files through that tool.
Embedded video providers. How long we keep it: Determined by Google, Vimeo, or Atlassian under their policies and applicable account settings. No single deletion period is promised. What happens on deletion: Collapsing the player stops playback. Deleting a Bettership resource does not delete provider viewing records or cookies.
7. Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, correct it, export it, or delete it. Email us and we’ll handle it, or delete your account yourself in the desktop app.
Access. Ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Export. Ask for a machine-readable copy of your personal data. We currently prepare exports manually.
Deletion. Delete your account or ask us to delete the personal data we hold about you. We complete account deletion within 30 days, subject to the limits in Section 6.
Correction. Ask us to correct inaccurate personal data.
Withdraw consent. Where a feature relies on your consent, you can withdraw it. That won’t change the lawfulness of processing that happened before you withdrew it.
Rights where you live. People in California, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other places may have additional rights under local law. We’ll handle requests in line with applicable law.
How to exercise them. Email privacy@bettership.ai for any request. We may ask for information needed to verify your identity before disclosing or changing personal data. To delete your account yourself, open Settings → Sign-in & security → Delete account in the desktop app. We’ll email you when deletion is finished. Files from live captures saved on another computer remain there until you remove them. If we need more time or cannot fulfill a request under applicable law, we’ll explain why.
8. Recording sessions with other people
A live capture can include a course, workshop, call, or conversation where other people speak. Their words become part of your unmasked transcript too. That’s part of how a live capture can be useful, and it’s also a responsibility.
You’re the one recording, so you decide what to record and who to tell. Recording rules differ by location, and you’re responsible for giving notice and getting any consent the law requires. Bettership shows a reminder when a recording starts. Our Terms of Service set out your responsibility in more detail.
You can delete a live capture in the app or request deletion under Section 7.
9. Content you bring in from other places
When you bring content into Bettership from somewhere else, you’re responsible for having the right to use it that way.
Websites, courses, books, videos, and other services have their own terms. Watched frames of paid content remain in your private workspace, subject to the processing described in this policy. A rights holder may ask us to remove material. Our Terms of Service carry the binding content rules.
10. Cookies, analytics, and similar technologies
We use a small set of cookies and similar storage technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and understand how Bettership is used. We don’t use them for advertising.
Essential. Sign-in and security tokens keep your account working and secure.
Functional. We remember preferences such as your theme and settings.
Analytics and diagnostics. We collect product activity and errors to understand what’s working and fix problems. In-app session replay is off. We’ll update this policy before enabling it.
Advertising and embedded media. Bettership does not place advertising-network pixels on the marketing site or use its own cookies for cross-context behavioral advertising. Video providers can collect viewing activity and use their own storage when you open their player, under the policies described in Section 5. Their players may show ads.
Your choices. Browser settings may let you block or delete cookies, though blocking those needed for sign-in can prevent the product from working.
11. Security overview
We protect data in transit and in cloud storage. Local recordings also depend on your computer’s security settings.
Connections to Bettership and its providers use encryption in transit, and our cloud database encrypts stored data. Local recordings are ordinary audio files without an additional encrypted container from Bettership. Access to learner data inside Scoutio LLC is limited to people who need it to operate Bettership.
If a security incident affects your personal data, we’ll notify you and applicable regulators as required by law. Bettership is in beta and doesn’t hold a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification.
For more on how we protect your data, see our security page.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Bettership changes. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
For material changes to what we collect, who receives it, how we use it, or how long we keep it, we’ll notify you by email before the change takes effect.
